The GOP's Move Toward Authoritarianism

A Warning About Donald Trump and 2024

NY Times, JANUARY 6, 2024

by NY Times Editorial Board

"Mr. Trump does not offer voters anything resembling a normal option of Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal, big government or small. He confronts America with a far more fateful choice: between the continuance of the United States as a nation dedicated to “the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity” and a man who has proudly shown open disdain for the law and the protections and ideals of the Constitution.”

How Trump could turn American into a fascist state

Robert Reich explains what Trump has done and threatens to do:

  1. Use threats of violence to gain power - "It will be a bloodbath..." "There will be violence in the streets..."
  2. Consolidate power -  Issue 'Schedule F' to enable the replacement of career civil servants with Trump loyalists
  3. Establish a police state - Invoke the Insurrection Act to send the U.S. military to stop protests
  4. Jail the opposition - Weaponize the Justice Dept and FBI
  5. Undermine the free press - "The enemy of the people!"

Trump's moves are right out of the authoritarian playbook

Ruth Ben-Ghiat, author of Strongmen, Mussolini to the Present says Trump appeals to extremists by calling MAGA a 'movement.' Extremists embrace movements, not a political parties.

"Trump is a weak man who wants to be a strong man."

Donald Trump, Victim King  Anand Giridharadas points out that Trump simultaneously wants his followers to believe he's both their strongman savior AND a persecuted victim.
